Livyah yarn is a family run company that began with Ellen’s life-long dream of having a yarn shop in Israel.  Well actually, when we say life-long we just mean ever since she learned to knit, or crochet, actually she learned to crochet first.

And although Ellen’s dream clearly stems from a genuine love creating beautiful yarn projects, we like to think that the roots of Livyah Yarn go much deeper than that…

Israel has an ancient and admirable history with yarn fibers, yarn, and yarncrafting.

Here are a few things that are unique to Israel and yarn.

•    Holy Shepherds- Avraham, Yitzchah, Yaakov, Moshe, and King David, just to name a few of the greatest leaders of the Tanach, were each shepherds at one point in their lives.
What do you think they did with ALL THAT WOOL?

•    Holy Mothers- The holy mothers of the Jewish people probably spun the wool from the flocks into yarn.  It’s also pretty likely that they made clothes out of the yarn that they spun.
What do you think that they talked about at their KNITTING GROUPS?

•    Reshit Hagez- there is a mitzvah incumbent upon any Jew who owns at least 5 sheep to donate some of the wool sheerings to a Cohan.  This mitzvah only applies in the land of Israel, and is still done today- much as it was done thousands of years ago.
Just think of all the yarn that can be made with ALL THAT WOOL?

•    Shaatnez- it is usually prohibited for a Jewish person to wear a garment that is made from both wool and linen- this is comparable to eating milk and meat together.  G-d actually cares about the fibers in Jewish people’s clothes.

The Livyah Yarn family is particularly appreciative of our collective heritage.  And although we don’t know for sure, it is very likely that our Holy Mothers spun yarn from their husband’s flocks.  And it could well be that they sold that yarn in a family business too.  If so, we can only wonder what their yarn store was called :)

Anyway, although we make no comparison of ourselves to our illustrious ancestors, let’s just say that we are pretty excited about selling yarn in the Land of Israel.
